What is Festival of Words?

In honor of Family Literacy Day, Cold Lake Community Learning Centre hosted  the  Festival of Words on Saturday, January 3, 2010

Over 500 adults and children attended our event in 2010 and 32 prize packages worth over $2,200.00 were won by those in attendance.

We wish to thank our sponsors Imperial Oil, Lakeland Credit Union, The Friends of the Cold Lake Library, K-ROCK,  CNRL, Literacy Alberta, OSUM, Devon Oil, Husky and all of our participants who made the day a rousing success.

We would also like to thank our Emcee Chris Gill

Festival of Words is a fun-filled afternoon for families to learn through play. Several community organizations volunteer their time to set up a variety of activity stations that promote literacy or learning. And of course no celebration would be complete without lots of food and prizes! Some of our activities in the past five years have included:

  • learning about medieval times - spinning and calligraphy
  • learning about Cold Lake's natural habitat - Pete the Pelican
  • word scrambles, searches and contests
  • contributing to a continuous story
  • nail decorating and temporary tattoos
  • painting, decorating cookies, making bookmarks and door hangers
  • talking about the positive and negative power of words
  • learning about Morse Code and semaphore
  • hearing about the good old days from local seniors
  • creating a time capsule
  • making play dough using a recipe
  • "When were you Born" timeline

We hope you will join us for the Annual Festival of Words on January 29, 2011 at Kin Hall in Cold Lake North.  This event just gets better and better every year.  Don't miss it!
